This lens is small for an f/2.8 model and although it suffers slightly at the wide-open aperture the focusing ability throughout the focal range warrants the aperture. From f/4 onwards it is a cracking lens that is light enough to have fitted to the camera permanently as a walk-round lens.

Its sharp enough in testing, shows to be very sharp in real usage, focuses plenty fast and accurately, the out of focus area looks pleasing to me, and it cost me 1/10th the cost of a 1D mark II with a couple of batteries and new CF cards.

The Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC is one of the best consumer/prosumer wide-angle zoom lenses we’ve used. While the price is a little higher than some lenses in this category, the constant – and usable! – f/2.8 aperture makes the lens a real winner in terms of value.

For the price, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Lens is a good value. It is definitely an upgrade from the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens.

The lens is sharp at f/8.0 to f/16 throughout its range, very good at f/5.6 and f/22, and usable at f/2.8 though rather soft.

The Sigma AF 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC is an interesting alternative to the basic kit zooms - a higher quality one that is. The performance is generally very good especially in the center of the image.
