Despite the fact that the "L" lens won in every comparison, I'm being pretty picky and I'm looking hard for faults. The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 actually looks like a pretty decent lens for casual use, and at $100 it's probably a bargain.

In lens land there's no such thing as a free lunch and the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II is an example for that. Under controlled conditions (stopping down two stops at 18mm) the lens can provide very decent results, certainly more than enough for casual users.

For the additional price of a DSLR kit over the DSLR body alone, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens is not a bad value. But you might be surprised by what your DSLR can do with some of the better lenses!

The 18-55/3.5-5.6 is a very good lens for $100. It's weaknesses show up at the ends of its zoom range (18mm and 55mm), especially in the corners of the frame when used wide open where resolution and contrast can be rather poor.
