All in all this lens feels very good to me. You can get great photos at f/1.4. Although the f/1.4 photos look worse than the slower aperture photos, you must remember we have been pixel peeping 12.7 megapixel shots.

The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L USM Lens is an excellent low-light hand-holdable lens. If you want the best Canon autofocus 24mm lens, look no farther. This is it.

I borrowed a 24/2.8 and exposed the same scene, at the same settings, on the same roll of film, with the two lenses. I found readily observable differences in contrast and flare control. Plus, the L lens has the extra speed that could mean the difference between making or losing the shot if the light is low and a tripod is not available.

The EF 24mm f/1.4L lens offers generally excellent center of field lens sharpness from f/2 on and very acceptable performance at f/1.4 in image center if you need it. Edge performance is probably acceptable for most applications, especially if you can stop the lens down to f/8.

If you're just looking for a high performance lens the EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L may be an option but frankly the EF 24mm f/2.8 is about as good at comparable aperture settings so it seems pointless to invest a magnitude more here.
