The Sigma is a superb lens. It is better than the Canon EF 35mm f/2 and definitely satisfies my requirements for a prime lens in this range. However, one must not forget that the Canon is just over half the price of the Sigma and as always in the lens world, you get what you pay for. The Canon is still an excellent value for those looking to get into primes.

Small. Inexpensive. Decently built. Loud. Bright. Sharp. No optical defects worth mentioning. Seriously, I wouldn't have any reservations about recommending this lens as a "normal" for anyone looking for a near-50 for the 1.6x field of view crop.

With a very low purchase price, the Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 Lens could make a nice affordable general-purpose lens.

The Canon EF 35mm f/2 proved to be a decent lens with very good performance figures in all primary characteristics. There's a little quality penalty at its largest aperture setting where the resolution is a little on the soft side combined with relatively high vignetting but the peak performance at medium apertures is highly impressive.
