Canon delivers everything that a photographer could want in a 100mm macro lens: ultrasonic focus motor, internal focus mechanism, non-rotating front element, floating optical group for consistent image quality at different magnifications, rugged construction, and reasonable price.

This 100mm macro's performance is the performance to which other lenses aspire. I wish everything was this good. You can use this lens as a reference against which to compare everything else. It's also a pleasure to use and well made.

If you are looking for a great macro lens, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens is a very good choice. It offers excellent optical performance and middle of the road focal length, working distance and size/weight.

Both lenses display excellent sharpness and contrast, and the only significant advantage the Canon has is in it’s vastly superior flare control. Other differences are fairly minor.

The old EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens had a superb reputation but Canon managed to keep up the performance of the USM successor despite of the introduction of a true IF design allowing to keep a constant lens length throughout the focus range.
