If you have a small-sensor camera, this is almost surely the best lens for most macro projects. If you need more working distance from the subject, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, $470 (review) may make sense, or even Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM, $1240 (review) for photographing skittish insects.

I have to admit, when the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens was announced, I was less than enthusiastic over a new short focal length macro lens compatible only with the EF-S lens mount Digital SLRs. But now that I've had a chance to use it, I think the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is a very nice lens.

The Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro delivers an almost flawless performance. The lens is capable to provide very sharp border-to-border results with minimal distortions and low CAs. The bokeh (out-of-focus blurr) is exceptionally smooth.

I wait to be convinced about Canon’s commitment to the EF-S mount and the restricted number of cameras that it will fit. However, if you own one of them and do not plan to upgrade to full frame in the future then this is a capable and versatile lens.
